Colour Grading
Colour grading is the process of altering and enhancing the color of a motion picture or television image, either electronically, photo-chemically or digitally. The photo-chemical process is also referred to as color timing and is typically performed at a photographic laboratory.

The colourist chooses the colours in which a film is shown in, eg colours used in "Saving Private Ryan" to create the sepia effect. The colourist chooses that fit the context of the film. Here is a still from the movie from Saving Private Ryan.

Continuity Piece 1

Continuity Piece 1-Analysis

Continuity Piece 1-Planning

Continuity Piece 1-Research
As we were expected to use close ups and shot reverse in our continuity piece, we looked at clips from television dramas like One Tree Hill and 90210, as they are constantly using these shots. Below is a clip from 90210 displaying why we watched it for our research.

Media Project:Planning

When we began our media project, we immediately chose to make a horror film and discussed shooting outside of the school. We already had numerous suggestions for location. Unfortunately our plans changed as we weren't allowed to take the camera off site, so we proceeded to find a suitable location in the school to start filming.

Our group has chosen to shoot a horror movie because were are all interested in them and, as a class, we have previously looked at examples of short horror movies. Below is a clip we had watched. This clip is one of the factors that made us want to shoot a horror.

As we had many individual ideas for the project, we each made our own storyboards, then used elements of  them all to create the storyboard we are going to use.

One suggestion that was brought up in the group was to give the film a classic touch, this led to the colour being changed into black and white using iMovie in the editing process.

Location wasn't a problem for us, as we were shooting in an old school. After searching the school, we found a spiralling staircase and added it to the storyboard. We did this to emphasize the feel of a classic horror.

Below is a clip from the 1946 horror/thriller The Spiralling Staircase.

To consider the use of mise-en-scene for creating effect.
To explore layering in sets.
We were asked to design the set of an undrground boxing training club.
These are pictures i found on google to represent what i would have on that set:

The Sounds of the Images

Today we explored the effects of sounds on the moving image and to create 'meaning' through sound design.

Keywords from last week: Ideology, Reading , Meaning, Genre, Institution, Narrative, Audience and Representation

A quote from Walter Murch- "Sound has a great power but it is conditional power. It places the physical and emotional contest, helping us to deciode how to take the image and how it intergrates itself into everything."
